Charles Anthony Jacelon (1st June, 1939 -13th April, 2005)

Charles Anthony Jacelon was educated at St Mary’s College, Port of Spain, where he won the Island scholarship in Modern Group in 1958.  He went on to study Law at Southampton University where he attained an Upper Second and was called to the bar at the Middle Temple in 1960. He continued to advance in academics in law and was awarded an LLM in 1962.

On his return to Trinidad, he embarked on his career in law where he had a distinguished career as an advocate and was appointed the coveted position of Senior Counsel in 1979. He went on to dabble in the Judiciary by holding the role of Puisne Judge and Justice of Appeal in 1981 for short periods.

He, together with Michael de la Bastide, founded and established the law firm de la Bastide & Jacelon, which later merged with the law firm Pollonais & Blanc on 1st July, 1998 forming the firm Pollonais, Blanc, de la Bastide & Jacelon. 

Jacelon went on to serve on various boards and act in various capacities including serving as Minister of Finance in 1981 until 1986. He also held the positions of Deputy Chairman of WASA in 1978, Chairman of the Board of TSTT in 1992, Deputy Chairman of BWIA in 1995, legal advisor to Amoco Trinidad Oil Company from 1971 to 1977, Chairman, Shipping Corporation of Trinidad & Tobago Limited from 1976 to 1981, Deputy Chairman of Mount Hope Medical Complex from 1975 to 1980, Member, Council of the Institute of Marine Affairs from 1976 to 1981, Member, National Housing Authority from 1980 to 1981, Director, Caribbean Insurance Company Limited from 1967 to 2005, Director of Beacon Insurance Limited from 1994 to 2005 and Director of Republic Bank Limited from 1995 to 2005. He also continued to contribute to the legal world by holding the role as a part time lecturer in both the University of the West Indies and the John Donaldson Technical Institute. 

His vast experience and appointments also attracted international recognition as he was listed in the International Who’s Who of Intellectuals in 1983. He also held the international roles of Governor of World Bank, Governor of International Monetary Fund, Governor of Inter American Development Bank and Governor of Caribbean Development Bank all from 1982 to 1986. He was also a Past President Rotary Club of Port of Spain.
